Should Bathroom Faucets Match Light Fixtures? [A Quick Guide]

bathroom lighting and faucets

When it comes to selecting fixtures such as faucets for your bathroom, a common question is whether or not the faucets should match the light fixtures.

While there is no right or wrong answer to this question, there are a few things to consider before making a decision.

Let’s take a look.

Should bathroom faucets match light fixtures?

No, bathroom faucets by no means have to match the light fixtures you choose for the bathroom.

For one, bathroom faucets don’t tend to be very ‘out there’ - you’ll be hard pressed to find a bathroom faucet that isn’t either silver or gold in colour, and that doesn’t follow basic design principles.

As well, when people feel it’s time for a change in their bathroom design, the lighting fixtures and the faucets are usually at the top of the list in things that can be easily changed/switched out.

So trying to always have these two sets of fixtures matching can really limit your design abilities.

Should bathroom fixtures match light fixtures?

It’s a different story for bathroom fixtures however.

By bathroom fixtures, we mean things like the mirrors, medicine cabinets, towel bars, and toilet paper holders. Essentially anything that could be easily switched out without the need for a plumber.

It can depend on your bathroom style...

One of the most important factors to consider when deciding if your bathroom fixtures should match your lighting fixtures is the style of your bathroom.

If you have a modern, contemporary bathroom, mixing and matching your fixtures can give the space a more wide-ranging and non-traditional look. You could couple clean features like marble, glass and wood with various styles of bathroom fixture, for example.

This would also help to create a more individualized bathroom just for your home, which many people (including myself!) like the idea of.

However, if you do have a more traditional and/or classic bathroom, you may want to opt for matching fixtures for a more unified appearance.

Take the bathroom in the image above as an example. It has quite a classic look, and all of the bathroom fixtures are focused on three colours - white, silver, and black - which really helps to unify the bathroom as a whole.

It can depend on the size of your bathroom...

Another important factor is the size of your bathroom.

If you have a large bathroom, you may be able to get away with mixing and matching your fixtures without it looking too busy or cluttered.

Everything will be quite spaced out from one another, so you don’t have to place as high an emphasis on having everything follow a similar style or pattern.

On the other hand, if you have a smaller bathroom, it’s best to stick with a consistent look to avoid overcrowding the space.

It can also be seen by some as quite jarring if you have too many ideas going on in the same space, which is definitely not what you want your guests thinking!

Consider your budget as well...

Lastly, consider the budget for your bathroom re-modelling project.

Buying matching bathroom fixtures can in some cases be significantly more expensive than buying two different types.

Rather than being able to shop around for the best deal for each item, you’re instead forced to find a single store and fixture set, and then choose from the few options available.

So, if you’re on a tight budget it may be wise to choose a mix-and-match option. Plus - this way enables you to be a lot more creatives with your fixture choices!

Final thoughts

The truth is, there isn’t a right or wrong answer when it comes to this question. It all boils down to personal preference and the style of your bathroom.

If you are going for a modern look, then having matching faucets and light fixtures can help tie the room together in a chic and elegant way.

On the other hand, if your bathroom is more traditional or eclectic, then mixing different styles of faucets and light fixtures can give the space a unique and individualized look.
